Mr. Harris was a leader in the dairy cattle farming business in our town, and his children worked with the state Preservation of Development Rights to preserve half of Harris Hill Farm.  Working together with New Milford Farmland Preservation Committee, the Harris children raised funds to establish a college scholarship fund in honor of their father and their mother, who was also deeply involved in promoting agriculture in our state for New Milford high school seniors interested in pursuing careers in agriculture.  (The fund is administered through the CT Community Foundation.)   In addition, Sue Harris, his daughter, was instrumental in working with the New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation in developing the successful first phase of the eight-farm New Milford Quilt Trail.  George Harris, who is being honored nationally, would have been proud of all his three of his children for what they have also done to encourage the continuation of agriculture in our town.
George was also an enormous supporter of Sullivan farm for years, and the Harrises have made their preserved farmland available to the New Milford Youth Agency Sullivan Farm college and high school interns for years for years. George, who passed in 2012, will be honored at an awards ceremony in Madison, WI, on October 4, 2018.
